| Spoiler alert for a 40-year-old film... |
When Planet of the Apes was released in 1968 it stunned audiences with it's incredible make-up design, special effects and crazy twist at the end. Fast-forward over 30 years, audiences were anticipating a remake helmed by Tim Burton. What they were given was a hot mess which pretty much killed the franchise off for the next decade. Enter Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
The 2011 film, directed by Rupert Wyatt, managed to reinvigorate the franchise and restored the public's interest in a world where apes rule over man. Although the film was generally praised for it's surprising poignancy, many fans of the original filmed panned the film for lacking a connection to the original series. These claims are not entirely true however, as the film does contain a couple awesome, if very subtle, nods to the original film.
Throughout the film, sly references are made to a space mission involving a certain vessel called Icarus, a vessel which any die hard Planet of the Apes fan would know, belongs to Charleton Heston's doomed crew in the original film. References include a briefly glimpsed news reports that the ship is entering the atmosphere of mars, as well as a newspaper with a headline that reads, "Lost in Space?".
